KURT ROSENWINKEL - chitarra
Nato a Philadelphia nel 1971, Kurt Rosenwinkel è da molti considerato il chitarrista più notevole e futuribile della sua generazione. Cresciuto in una famiglia dove la musica rivestiva un ruolo importante, dopo gli inizi nella sua città natale si trasferisce a Boston dove studia presso il Berklee College of Music, dove viene scritturato da Gary Burton per unirsi al proprio gruppo. In seguito entra a far parte della Electric BeBop Band di Paul Motian e nel 2001 si trasferisce a New York, dove ha modo di sviluppare la propria concezione musicale suonando regolarmente in club come lo Small’s e collaborando tra altri con Brad Mehldau, Mark Turner, Ben Street, Larry Grenadier, Avishai Cohen, Jeff Ballard e Jorge Rossy. Il suo primo cd lo incide con la Fresh Sound New Talent, una etichetta spagnola che sin dalla nascita di questa nuova scena di future star mondiali ne ha saputo documentare l’evoluzione in modo costante. In questo suo primo lavoro, uscito nel 1997 e registrato dal vivo allo Small’s, Rosenwinkel dimostra già una grande maturità e profondità di concezione unite a un tratto sonoro inconfondibile. Nel 1998 pubblica con la Criss-Cross “Intuit”. Pochi mesi dopo la registrazione di “East Coast Love Affair”, Kurt ritorna in studio con Mark Turner, Ben Street, Jeff Ballard e il tastierista Scott Kinsey per incidere quello che nel 2000 sarebbe diventato il primo degli album da lui pubblicati con la Verve, “The Enemies of Energy”. Prima di passare alla Verve Rosenwinkel ottiene un contratto con la Impulse!, per la quale incide un cd, “Under it All”, che non verrà pubblicato a causa dell’assorbimento della Impulse! da parte della Universal. Sempre per la Verve pubblica nel 2000 “The Next Step” e nel 2003 “Heartcore”, la cui realizzazione presso il proprio studio richiede a Kurt due anni e mezzo di lavoro. “Deepsong” del 2004 vede la partecipazione accanto a Kurt di Joshua Redman - il cui cd “Momentum” vede la collaborazione di Kurt - Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, e Ali Jackson e Jeff Ballard alla batteria.
Guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel began his professional career in 1990, when he dropped out of Berklee only two and a half years into his college education to go on tour with Gary Burton and his band. Burton gave the young musician a hand up, helping him move to New York, giving him money, and setting him up with the kind of connections that Rosenwinkel needed to get started. The effort paid off when Rosenwinkel shortly became one of the most respected jazz guitarists on the East Coast. His fluid style got him jobs as a member, session musician, and touring musician within a number of ensembles and earned him praise from other veteran guitarists like John Scofield and Pat Metheny. Over the following eight years he was featured on 12 albums, with Burton, Paul Motian, Mark Turner, Seamus Blake, and others. He also won a Composer's Award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1995. In 1998 he released a solo album on Criss Cross Records -- a collection of standards entitled Intuit. 2000 brought him his major-label debut on Verve, Enemies of Energy, which allowed him to stretch creatively and simultaneously show off the performance skills which were honed during touring and nearly weekly gigs at Small's in New York as well as his interpretive and compositional strengths.
